Facts About Hunger
– The effects of hunger on the working poor range from lack of stamina and increased illness to feelings of hopelessness and despair
– The elderly make up 4% of Long Island’s hungry, for many reasons, including not having enough income, suffering from depression and loneliness or experiencing side effect from multiple medications. Seniors who are hungry are at increased risks for illness, disease, depression, anxiety and even premature death
– 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under 18 years old. They have virtually no voice and must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need
Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island, and provides to the best of their ability for the humanitarian needs of the community. They provide food when and where it’s needed, while promoting self-sufficiency and public education.
To assist the increasing number of individuals and families turning to local food pantries and food banks for assistance, Long Island Cares, Inc.- The Harry Chapin Food Bank operates three emergency food pantries. These first stop food pantries provide individuals and families in need with up to five days worth of food, along with information about critical community resources.
