The Internal Revenue Service is warning tax preparers and other tax professionals to be on guard against bogus emails circulating now seeking updated personal or professional information, but in fact is really a phishing scam.
IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said, “I urge taxpayers to be wary of clicking on strange emails and websites. They may be scams to steal your personal information.”
The bogus emails will specifically ask for tax professionals to update their IRS e-services portal information and Electric Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs). Within the bogus emails are links that appear to be a phishing scheme designed to capture usernames and passwords.
The IRS wants everyone to be aware these emails were not generated by the IRS e-services program. Please disregard this email and do not click on any links contained within the email.
